The Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI’s) Biometric Identification and Records Unit (BIRU) recently purchased LiveScan machines and equipment for nine counties to support their operational needs.

The LiveScan devices directly capture demographic information as well as digital fingerprint images which are then sent to the CBI electronically for processing through the CBI’s Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

The inkless fingerprinting process then securely electronically transmits fingerprint records in seconds. Compared to ink fingerprints, LiveScan is considered a faster, more accurate, and easier method of providing fingerprints for background checks and other identification purposes.

The counties that received machines are Bent, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Costilla, Custer, Huerfano, Lake, Rio Blanco and Washington.

“It’s all about assisting law enforcement and making it safer for our partners working to make their communities safer,” said CBI Director Chris Schaefer.

LiveScan is approved by the CBI for both Applicant and Criminal submissions.

Clear Creek County Undersheriff John W. Stein said the equipment will be an invaluable tool for the department.

"This is a great enhancement for the Sheriff's Office and our community that we could not have been able to afford without the assistance of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation," Stein said.

BIRU also purchased 200 Mobile IDs for various officers to use on the road to identify people as needed.

Mobile ID is a digital version of your driver's license or state-issued ID that lives in an app on your phone. Mobile ID helps prove identities but also helps to protect personal data.
