More About Alerts

AMBER Alerts
The AMBER Alert Program is a nationwide emergency response system created to help quickly locate abducted children who are believed to be in immediate danger. Named in memory of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman, whose 1996 abduction inspired the program, AMBER Alerts rapidly share critical information with the public through television, radio, highway message signs, and mobile phone alerts. In Colorado, the program is managed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in partnership with local law enforcement to engage the public as vital partners in bringing children home safely.

Colorado Missing Senior Citizen Alert Program
The Colorado Missing Senior Citizen Alert Program was created in 2006 to help quickly locate seniors who go missing and are believed to be in danger. When specific criteria are met—including age, impaired mental condition, and a credible threat to safety—local law enforcement works with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to activate an alert. Information is rapidly shared with the public through television, radio, and highway message signs to assist in the safe recovery of the missing senior.

Persons with Developmental Disabilities Alert Program
The Persons with Developmental Disabilities Alert Program was established in 2007 to help law enforcement quickly locate vulnerable individuals who go missing and face a credible threat to their safety. When specific criteria are met and verified by local law enforcement, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation coordinates the alert by sharing critical information with media outlets and, when applicable, displaying vehicle details on highway message signs to engage the public in the search.

Blue Alert Program
The Colorado Blue Alert Program was established in 2011 to help protect law enforcement officers and the public when a peace officer is killed or seriously injured and a dangerous suspect is at large. Coordinated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in partnership with local law enforcement and media broadcasters, Blue Alerts rapidly share critical suspect information through emergency broadcasts, mobile alerts, and highway message signs to aid in the swift and safe apprehension of suspects.

Medina Alert Program
The Colorado Medina Alert Program was created in 2014 to help quickly locate suspects involved in serious hit-and-run crashes resulting in death or severe injury. Named in honor of Jose Medina, whose tragic death led to the program’s creation, Medina Alerts are activated when law enforcement has enough identifying information about a suspect or vehicle. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation coordinates the alert by rapidly sharing details with media outlets and displaying vehicle information on highway message signs to engage the public in locating the suspect.

Endangered Missing Alert Program
The Colorado Endangered Missing Alert Program—also known as a Media Alert—is used to quickly share information about missing persons who are believed to be at risk but do not meet the criteria for other alert programs. When endangering circumstances are evident, local law enforcement works with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to distribute critical details through media outlets and, when applicable, highway message signs to engage the public in assisting with the search.

Colorado Missing Indigenous Person Alert Program
The Colorado Missing Indigenous Person Alert Program was established in 2022 to help locate missing Indigenous individuals and bring greater awareness to these cases statewide. When criteria are met and an alert is requested by local law enforcement, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation coordinates the rapid sharing of information through media outlets and, when applicable, highway message signs to engage the public in assisting with the search.
