The men and women of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation throughout our region strive to meet the CBI mission through their daily commitment to excellence in their various duties and roles throughout the organization.


Forensic Services

National Laboratory Accreditation, coupled with outstanding scientific training and proficiency testing regimens, ensures quality systems and integrity of the forensic examinations conducted on evidence in criminal cases throughout Colorado.

Investigative Services

Extensive investigative experience, training, and exemplary performance are requirements for the members of the CBI's Investigative Section.

Crime Information Management Unit

The commitment to accuracy and comprehensive identification and back grounding services, illustrate the everyday diligence needed to promote safety through identification of arrestees and civil applicants, assessing eligibility for purchase of firearms, and clearances for issuance of concealed weapon permits. And finally, CBI management and administration of statewide criminal justice computer systems requires continuous diligence and oversight of the technology and processes utilized by each and every local and state law enforcement officer, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Biometric Identification and Records Unit

The Biometric Identification and Records,Unit (BIRU) of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) supports law enforcement agencies as well as the public. It is the responsibility of this unit to maintain and update all information stored in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), used in the identification of fingerprints, and the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC), which houses all fingerprint based Colorado Criminal History Record Information (CCHRI) records. Colorado is an open records state and this information is available to the public.


Firearms InstaCheck Unit:

The Firearms InstaCheck Unit is responsible for ensuring that proper procedures along with state and federal guidelines are adhered to and followed by all citizens wishing to purchase a firearm. The Firearms InstaCheck Unit performs comprehensive background investigations into each and every firearm purchase, as well as reviews all concealed weapon permit applications, helping to promote gun safety within the state of Colorado.
