Colorado Missing Senior Citizen Alert Program

On April 4, 2006, the Governor signed SB 06-057: Colorado Missing Senior Citizen Alert Program. This bill defines a missing senior citizen and creates the Missing Senior Citizen Alert Program to broadcast notice of missing senior citizens.

Criteria

Criteria must be met to activate a Missing Senior Citizen Alert.

  1. The person must have gone missing while in Colorado.
  2. The person missing must be 60 years of age or older.
  3. The person must be verified from a local law enforcement agency that the missing senior citizen has an impaired mental condition.
  4. The person's disappearance must pose a credible threat to the safety and health of the person.

If these criteria are met, a local law enforcement agency will notify the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI.) CBI will then obtain information about the missing person and circumstances of their disappearance to begin the alert activation procedure. The CBI will forward information on to participating radio stations, television stations, and other media outlets in Colorado. If there is a license plate number associated with a vehicle known to the missing person, the Department of Transportation Operation Center may post the plate number on Variable Message Signs (VMS) on Colorado highways.
