The Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s four Forensic Services labs are preparing for their four-year reaccreditation assessment. The weeklong process begins the first week of April.

The laboratories are accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Accreditation is based on ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards, the ANAB Forensic Science Testing and Calibration supplemental requirements, and FBI Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing and DNA Databasing Laboratories.

About 18 assessors will come from forensic laboratories across the country to visit all four labs during April. The assessors will evaluate the labs’ technical qualifications, competence, and laboratory testing. It’s part of a regular accreditation cycle that includes initial on-site assessment for accreditation followed by regular surveillance activities to assess continued compliance with accreditation requirements.

CBI then has 30 days to correct any potential findings. After that time, ANAB has another 30 days to accept the corrections and offer accreditation.

"While this process can be daunting due to the comprehensive nature of the review, it provides the members of the CBI’s Forensic Services section with the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in forensic testing," said Deputy Director Lance Allen who oversees CBI Forensic Services.

The labs are located in Pueblo, Arvada, Grand Junction and Greeley.
