July 15, 2025 – CBI/DCJ –  Lakewood, CO –  Today the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announce the launch of a new toxicology dashboard designed to provide  the latest drug and alcohol blood toxicology testing for suspected impaired driving offenses. This collaborative initiative aims to inform the public and improve understanding of trends in impaired driving.

The interactive dashboard, accessible on the CBI's Forensic Services  web page, will be updated every six months. The dashboard offers a comprehensive look at completed toxicology tests. Key data points will include:

  • Mean Time to Complete Testing: Providing insight into the efficiency of the toxicology testing process.
  • Percentage of Samples Detecting Potentially Impairing Substances: Showing the prevalence of illicit and prescription drugs and alcohol in suspected impaired driving cases.
  • Number of Completed Toxicology Tests by Agency: Differentiating between tests initiated by the Colorado State Patrol and those by all other law enforcement agencies across the state.

The data presented is derived from blood toxicology tests meticulously completed by the CBI Forensic Services. CBI’s Forensic Services is a nationally accredited forensic laboratory that offers free toxicology testing to all Colorado law enforcement agencies investigating impaired driving cases. The data collected is analyzed by the Office of Research and Statistics, Division of Criminal Justice.

"This new dashboard represents a significant step forward in our commitment to public safety and transparency," said Rebecca Spiess, Interim CBI Director. "By making this vital data readily available, we empower the public, policymakers, and law enforcement to better understand the landscape of impaired driving in Colorado and work collaboratively towards solutions."

“Data is one of the most powerful tools we have to drive change,” said Matthew Lunn, Director of the Division of Criminal Justice. “By bringing impaired driving toxicology results into public view, we’re not only advancing transparency, we’re giving communities, law enforcement, and lawmakers a clearer lens into the challenges we face and the strategies that can lead to safer roads across Colorado.”

The dashboard serves as a valuable resource for:

  • Public Awareness: Educating Colorado residents on the impact of impaired driving.
  • Policy Development: Providing data-driven insights for legislative and programmatic interventions.
  • Law Enforcement Operations: Offering agencies a clearer picture of testing trends and enforcement efforts.
  • Research and Analysis: Supporting further academic and governmental studies on impaired driving. This launch of statistics reflects data from the year 2024 with subsequent updates occurring every six months thereafter. The State of Colorado encourages all interested parties to explore this new resource and utilize the information to contribute to safer roads across the state.
