08/07/2019--The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made available the state’s 2018 crime statistics through the interactive Colorado Crime Stats system, as reported by 245 law enforcement agencies
The *National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) offers extensive information about a number of different crime categories, while the Colorado Crime Stats system provides visitors access to dozens of existing reports or to build customized reports, giving a more robust review of statewide crime data.
In looking at the statistics, there was a 7.95% increase in the category of Violent Crime in 2018 compared to 2017. It should be noted that more than half of the violent crimes fell into the category of aggravated assault. Additionally, the crime of murder decreased 3.21% from 2017.
Please note these snapshots will vary slightly upon release. Colorado Crime Stats is a view into a dynamic system, not a static report. Therefore, if a law enforcement agency updates their reported incidents, those changes are reflected in the website immediately.
New to the Colorado Crime Stats system this year is a theme that focuses on hate crime. This theme contains charts and statistics and was created to bring more awareness to this important issue. To learn more about the NIBRS reporting standards for Hate Crime, please see the FBI’s FAQ section:
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is the reporting system currently used by the FBI as the industry standard. NIBRS counts each crime committed in a given incident. For example, if someone breaks into a house, assaults the homeowner and steals their car, NIBRS counts a burglary, an assault, and a motor vehicle theft in that single criminal incident. It’s important to note that this is not necessarily an indication of more crime, only greater-detail regarding each criminal incident.
