August 20, 2025 – CBI –  Lakewood, CO –The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is enhancing public safety and law enforcement efficiency by providing new mobile identification devices to agencies throughout the state. Since July 2024, the CBI has distributed 264 devices to 37 different agencies, helping officers quickly and accurately identify individuals in the field.

The Mobile Fingerprint Devices 2.0 utilize advanced technology to perform on-the-spot identification by accessing law enforcement databases in the field.

“This technology is a game-changer for officers on patrol,” said CBI Director Armando Saldate. “It allows for rapid identification, which is crucial for ensuring officer safety and making informed decisions during encounters with the public.”

Wheat Ridge Police received 5 of the newest devices from the CBI, which means it no longer has to rely on neighboring agencies to assist with a mobile fingerprint scanner when Wheat Ridge Police officers encounter someone they suspect is giving them a false name or identification.

“This donation from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is another tool to make our officers more efficient in creating public safety in Wheat Ridge,” said Wheat Ridge Police Chief Chris Murtha. “Having state-of-the-art fingerprint scanners helps us identify subjects faster, clear them for potential warrants and quickly move on to other calls in our community.

The CBI continues to work with agencies that could benefit most from this technology, aiming to equip as many criminal justice agencies as possible. Since the initial rollout, the CBI has provided ongoing support for both software and hardware issues, ensuring the devices remain effective and reliable for officers.

The initiative received a significant boost with the CBI being awarded the 2024 Adam Walsh Grant. This funding will be used to purchase additional mobile identification devices specifically for patrol officers who interact with registered sex offenders. These new devices will enable officers to quickly confirm registry information in the field and at the station, improving the tracking and accountability of registered offenders.

The CBI remains committed to leveraging technology to support its partners and enhance the safety and security of Colorado's communities.
