Concealed Handgun Permit
The CBI conducts background checks and fingerprint screenings in partnership with county sheriffs. Applicants submit fees through their sheriff’s office, which forwards payments to the CBI for processing through the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC), FBI, and InstaCheck systems. This process ensures compliance with state and federal law while maintaining public safety in Colorado.
Background Check to Obtain a Firearm
The CBI Firearms InstaCheck Unit conducts background checks for all firearm purchases and transfers in Colorado, ensuring compliance with state and federal law. If a purchase is denied, individuals may file an appeal within 30 days through the online system or by mail, allowing CBI to review records and, when appropriate, overturn the denial.
