More About Firearms InstaCheck Services and Resources

Concealed Handgun Permit
The CBI conducts background checks and fingerprint screenings in partnership with county sheriffs. Applicants submit fees through their sheriff’s office, which forwards payments to the CBI for processing through the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC), FBI, and InstaCheck systems. This process ensures compliance with state and federal law while maintaining public safety in Colorado.

Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Reciprocity
Under C.R.S. 18-12-213, Colorado recognizes another state's permit only if that state honors Colorado’s, the holder is a resident of that state, is 21 or older, has a valid permit, and carries matching state-issued ID. Colorado does not recognize permits issued to nonresidents, and Colorado residents must use a Colorado-issued CHP when carrying in-state. When traveling, always confirm reciprocity and review the firearm laws of the state you plan to visit.

Firearms/Evidence Returns
Learn about the process law enforcement agencies must follow when returning firearms. Through the Disposition of Firearms (DOF) process, the CBI InstaCheck Unit reviews requests to ensure firearms are released only to those legally allowed to possess them. If an individual is ruled ineligible, the CBI Appeals Unit provides a process for review and reconsideration.

Legislation, Rules, and Statutes
The CBI Firearms Unit conducts background checks, including background checks, extreme risk protection orders, large-capacity magazine restrictions, and firearm transfers. It also covers dealer responsibilities, gun show requirements, and the CBI’s role in the national background check system. This section serves as a guide to the key rules governing firearm ownership and regulation in the state.
