CBI forensic labs preparing for reaccreditation process

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s four Forensic Services labs are preparing for their four-year reaccreditation assessment. The weeklong process begins the first week of April.

The laboratories are accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Accreditation is based on ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards, the ANAB Forensic Science Testing and Calibration supplemental requirements, and FBI Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing and DNA Databasing Laboratories.

CBI labs recognized for implementing national standards

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is proud to announce its forensic labs were nationally recognized as a “OSAC Standards Implementer” for their application of high-quality standards and practices in forensic science by the National Institutes of Science and Technology (NIST)-sponsored Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC).

CBI seeking information in Ignacio cold case

The Ignacio Police Department has requested the assistance of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a 2009 cold case homicide investigation.

Larry Fuller, 49, was shot and killed while walking home from the Sidekick Bar in Ignacio on Jan. 1, 2009, less than two hours into the New Year. He had been at the bar at 677 Goddard Avenue with his wife Paula Silva when he decided to walk home alone.

While walking home, Fuller, a diesel mechanic, was shot in the 300 block of Goddard Avenue. He died at the scene. Fuller, a father of four, had moved to Colorado in 2000.

Babysitter arrested in death of Conejos County child

A babysitter has been arrested in the death of a 23-month-old girl in Conejos County.

Denise Cordova (DOB: 03/03/1975) was taken into custody by the Conejos County Sheriff's Office Friday, Feb. 24, 2023. 

The sheriff's office began investigating after the child was transported to a local hospital Jan. 31, 2023 with life-threatening injuries. The child later died. At the time of the incident, the child was in the care of babysitter Cordova.

CBI was asked to assist with the investigation.

‘Colorado People Who Wander’ Website Goes Live

Families facing issues related to people who wander have access to a new website for resources and information.

Legislation passed during the 2022 Colorado legislative session enhanced efforts to provide assistance to Colorado families of people who wander, along with the availability of state-sponsored grants to assist local governments with recovery programs. The information is housed under the umbrella of the CBI website.

Park County Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Continues

Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) agents continue to investigate the officer-involved shooting incident in Park County on February 9, 2023. 

The suspect in the incident remains hospitalized and is expected to survive. The name of 45-year-old male suspect is not being released at this time.

At the conclusion of the investigation, CBI agents will present the case information to the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.
 

Officer-Involved Shooting in Park County

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting occurring in Park County on February 9, 2023.

At approximately 7:50 p.m., Park County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on CSH 285 near the town of Bailey when the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser failed to stop and began driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph.  A short pursuit was terminated due to public safety from the erratic and dangerous driving of the suspect.

Honoring Colorado Missing Persons Day

Colorado Missing Persons Day was honored with a series of events at the state Capitol building on Friday, February 3, 2023. In addition to a Resolution being read at the Capitol, a prayer vigil will honor nearly 600 individuals currently missing for a year or more in the State of Colorado.

Colorado Missing Persons Day is being honored with a series of events at the state Capitol building (200 E. Colfax Avenue) beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023. In addition to a Resolution being read at the Capitol, a prayer vigil will honor 589 individuals currently missing for a year or more in the State of Colorado.

AMBER Alert Awareness Day: January 13

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recognizes National AMBER Alert Awareness Day on January 13, 2023, in remembrance of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman who went missing in Texas and was found deceased five days later in 1996. In 1996, the AMBER Alert program was developed in her memory to create a network to share information in the event of a child abduction.
