CBI Requested to Investigate Use of Force Incident in Kit Carson County

The CBI has been requested to investigate a use of force incident involving two members of the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office (KCCSO) on March 15, 2024.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the KCCSO members responded to a residence in Flagler for an active arrest warrant of a suspect in connection to an alleged domestic violence and felony menacing incident from Thursday evening (March 14, 2024). The shooting occurred following a confrontation during the search of the residence and remains under investigation.

Warrant Issued in Limon Homicide

A warrant has been issued in the death of a Limon man that has been classified as a homicide.
Carl James "Butch" Hoopingarner, Jr. (DOB: 03/14/1964), Ohio, is being held in Ohio by the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office on unrelated charges at this time.
 

It’s believed Hoopingarner was involved in an altercation with in Everett Dale Kerr (DOB:10/16/1959) in Kerr’s home in the 700 block of Wisconsin Avenue in Limon where Kerr allegedly suffered fatal injuries in that altercation.
 

Mineral County Remains Dating Back 33 Years Identified

Remains located in Mineral County dating back to 1991 have been identified through work performed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Cold Case team and the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.

Using Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG), confirming with dental records and other investigative tools, the remains have been identified as those of Steven Kenneth Risku (DOB 08/16/1957) of Indiana.

Risku's remains were located on Wolf Creek Pass in Mineral County in 1991.

La Junta Shooting Update

The La Junta Police Department (LJPD) is working with agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in search of the person(s) responsible for multiple shots fired incidents that sent one juvenile to the hospital on February 2, 2024.

One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot during the incident last Friday night. The juvenile was taken to the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center for treatment and released that same night.  

CBI Requested to Investigate Cheyenne County Death

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested to investigate the circumstances surrounding a man reported deceased at a home in Cheyenne County.

At approximately 11:35 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2024, deputies with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the 2000 block of County Road BB and located a resident of the home with injuries. The man was initially transported to a local hospital but then transferred to a Denver-area hospital for treatment. The man later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on Monday, January 22, 2024.

Colorado Missing Persons Day Ceremony to be held at State Capitol

Colorado Missing Persons Day is being honored with a series of events at the state Capitol building (200 E. Colfax Avenue) beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024. In addition to a Resolution being read at the Capitol, a prayer vigil will honor 606 individuals currently missing for a year or more in the State of Colorado.

Colorado Missing Persons Open House – January 31, 2024

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is hosting an open house for families who have missing loved ones who are interested in providing a family reference sample. The event will take place on January 31, 2024 at CBI Headquarters, 690 Kipling St, Denver, CO 80215.

January 13 Marks AMBER Alert Awareness Day

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recognizes National AMBER Alert Awareness Day on January 13, 2024, in remembrance of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman who went missing in Texas and was found deceased five days later in 1996.

U.S. Marshals Task Force Safely Recovers 2 Critically Missing Children and Arrest Fugitive Grandmother

Please see the following news release prepared by the U.S. Marshals. Members of the CBI were heavily involved in this investigation and recovery of the missing children. 

 

A month’s long investigation into the whereabouts of two missing and endangered children believed to have been abducted by their biological grandmother has come to an end with both children recovered safely, and the grandmother arrested.
