U.S. Postal Inspectors Arrest Post Office Armed Robbery Suspect

On January 10, 2019, the Denver office of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the federal law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service, in coordination with the Denver Police Department, arrested the suspect involved in the armed robbery of the U.S. Post Office located at 1074 S. Ironton St., Aurora, CO 80012 on November 8, 2018.

Following the post office robbery, USPIS conducted an active federal investigation, which lead to the identification of Willie Dewayne PHILLIP, age 54, of Aurora, Colorado. PHILLIP faces one count of 18 USC 2114 – Assault/Robbery involving mail, money, or other property of U.S. using a dangerous weapon. A federal arrest warrant for PHILLIP was issued by court order following the USPIS
investigation. USPIS and area law enforcement have been actively working to locate PHILLP since the issuance of the arrest warrant.

PHILLIP was located by Postal Inspectors today in a private residence in the area of East 18th Avenue and Franklin Street, Denver, CO 80218. Information obtained from residents of the duplex indicated that PHILLIP was inside and he was armed with a firearm.

At approximately 2:35 P.M., Postal Inspectors requested the assistance of the Denver Police Department SWAT team. Denver Police SWAT units attempted to call PHILLIP out of the residence. PHILLIP voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody at approximately 4:33 P.M.

The Denver office of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service would like to thank the Aurora Police Department, Denver Police Department, Colorado Bureau of Investigation - Denver Forensic Science Laboratory, and the Denver office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for their collective assistance in the investigation. The longstanding partnerships with these collective agencies were a crucial element to the swift resolution to this investigation.

A reward notice was posted to local media outlets and via the @uspis_den Twitter account on December 11, 2018. Please reference the earlier document for an image of PHILLIP; no mugshot is available at this time.
