At the request of the Silverthorne Police Department, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is serving as the lead agency investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Silverthorne on Monday, October 16, 2023.

Although early in the investigation, it’s believed a male suspect was spotted attempting to break into (trespass) a vehicle parked in the lot of the Summit Place Shopping Center (I-70 and Colorado Highway 6) just before 8:00 p.m. Monday.

A patrol officer responding to the area attempted to contact the male suspect who fled the area on foot. As the suspect attempted to flee officers from multiple agencies responding to the scene, it’s believed the suspect tried to car-jack multiple vehicles in the area of Colorado Highway 6, north of Stephens way. The suspect never took possession of a vehicle and remained on foot until the conclusion of the incident.

The suspect was armed with a weapon and discharged that weapon during the foot pursuit.  No civilians or law enforcement personnel were injured.

While multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the assist, an officer with the Silverthorne Police Department was the only officer involved in the shooting incident.  The agencies responding to assist include: Silverthorne, Dillon and Frisco police departments and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

As part of this investigation, CBI agents are reviewing body worn camera footage from the incident, conducting a number of interviews and canvassing the area.

The case information will be presented to District Attorney Heidi McCollum of the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.

Summit County Coroner Amber Flenniken has not made official identification of the deceased. That information will be released when available.

The Silverthorne police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is completed, per standard practice.
