An early morning stabbing left one person dead and a juvenile in custody in Bayfield, Colorado on August 2, 2021.

Just after 1:30 am on Monday, law enforcement received an alarm notification from the Speedway Gas Station/Convenience Store (650 Buck Highway—County Road 521).

Clerk Jadah Willmett (DOB: 07/14/2000) of La Plata County was found stabbed inside the store. Willmett was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding emergency medical personnel.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper responding to the alarm detained a 17-year-old juvenile seen exiting the convenience store. The investigation determined the teen was allegedly responsible for the Willmett’s murder and was taken into custody.

It’s believed the juvenile acted alone and that there is no on-going threat to the community. The preliminary investigation indicates the stabbing stemmed from a possible robbery at the store.

The suspect is being held at a juvenile detention facility in Mesa County and is facing a charge of first-degree murder.

The Bayfield Marshal’s Office requested the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to lead the investigation. In addition to the CBI, CSP and the Bayfield Marshal’s Office, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
