12/06/2019—Law enforcement continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Avon, Colorado just after 8:00 p.m. on December 5, 2019.

A Colorado State Patrol (CSP) trooper attempted to make a traffic stop of a U-Haul truck on eastbound I-70, near the Avon exit on Thursday night. Rather than stopping on the interstate, the driver of the U-Haul  pulled into the parking lot of a Walgreens (15 Sun Rd.). A man then exited the vehicle brandishing a firearm.

It’s believed law enforcement (CSP, Avon Police Department and Eagle County Sheriff’s Office) made ongoing attempts to negotiate with the man, in addition to the use of less-lethal techniques being deployed. The incident ended with shots being fired, striking the man.

The 58-year-old Nevada man was taken to the Vail Health Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld pending the notification of family.

No members of law enforcement were injured during the incident.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was requested to investigate the officer-involved shooting along with the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

CBI agents are in the process of conducting interviews and finishing processing the scene.

No additional information is available at this time, as this is an ongoing investigation. Updates will be provided as they become available.
