04/17/2019—A Manzanola woman suspected of attempting to murder her two daughters was arrested on April 16, 2019.

Christine Martinez (DOB: 02/13/1986) was taken into custody and transported to the Otero County Detention Facility where she is currently being held on $50,000 bond. She is facing charges of Attempted First Degree Murder, Assault in the First Degree, Child Abuse and Arson.

It’s alleged Martinez attempted to murder her two daughters (ages 8 and 10) at her home in Manzanola. She then placed them in her vehicle, and while driving on Colorado State Highway 207, she left the roadway and landed in the Arkansas River in the morning hours of Sunday, March 31.

A passerby in the area called emergency responders and the two girls were rescued from the SUV. Martinez was located outside of the vehicle.

All three were transported for medical treatment. While their injuries were serious, all have since been released from the hospital.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Manzanola Marshal, and the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.

Martinez is scheduled to appear in the Otero County District Court on April 24, 2019.

Because the incident involves allegations of child abuse, information released about the case will be limited.

Manzanola is located approximately 50 miles east of Pueblo.
