La Junta Man Arrested in Southeast Colorado Shooting

03/21/2020—A La Junta man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder following a shooting in southeast Colorado on Friday, March 20, 2020.

Officers with the La Junta Police Department (LJPD) were dispatched to the 800 block of Santa Fe Avenue on a disturbance call just before 11:30 p.m., late Friday night.

While investigating the source of the disturbance, LJPD officers learned two people were being treated for gunshot wounds at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta. A 27-year-old La Junta man was pronounced deceased at the hospital, while another shooting victim, a 27-year-old La Junta woman​,​ was treated and released. The names of the victims are not available at this time.

Investigators were able to identify an alleged suspect in the case and contacted Aaron Ignacio Vigil Perez (DOB: 4/24/99) at an apartment in Rocky Ford where he was taken into custody by local authorities without incident.

It’s believed the suspect and victims are known to one another, however, the details regarding the disturbance and what led to the shootings remain under investigation.

Perez was taken to the Otero County Jail where he is being held without bond on suspicion of murder in the first degree.  

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), LJPD, and the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.
