November 5, 2025 – CBI – Durango, CO – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is leading an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred north of Durango on Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2025. At approximately 2:40 p.m., the Durango Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a male and female involved in a physical domestic disturbance inside a moving vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 550, leaving the City of Durango. A La Plata County Sheriff’s Deputy and a Durango Police Officer located the vehicle in the 28000 block of U.S. Highway 550 and initiated a traffic stop. According to preliminary information, (including officer body-cam footage) the female passenger ran towards law enforcement officers for aid. The male driver, armed with an ax handle and a baseball bat advanced toward the female and the Deputy. The Deputy fired his service weapon. Multiple officers immediately rendered first aid to the male suspect. The male driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female passenger was uninjured, and no law enforcement officers or other individuals were injured during the incident. Per standard protocol, the Deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The CBI is the lead investigative agency, with support from the Southwest Regional Shoot Team, which includes multiple state and local law enforcement agencies from across southwest Colorado.
