CBI Requested to Assist in Sterling Officer-Involved Incident

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested by the Sterling Police Department to assist in an investigation of an officer-involved shooting. Please see a news release from the Sterling Police Department regarding this incident.

UPDATE*Officer Involved Shooting*

On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at approximately 7:04pm, Sterling Police received a report of Douglas Sanchez being at the Eagle Convenience store located in the 900 block of West Main Street. Douglas Sanchez, 54 of Sterling, was wanted on numerous charges as a result of a shooting incident that occurred 6 days prior on September 30, 2020 in which Mr. Sanchez is the suspect. Mr. Sanchez was wanted on the following charges:

*18-3-102(1)(A)- Murder in the First Degree, Criminal Attempt, Class 2 Felony 

*18-3-206(1)(A)- Menacing, Class 5 Felony 

*18-12-108- Possession of Weapon by Previous Offender, Class 6 Felony

*18-3-208- Reckless endangerment, Class 3 Misdemeanor 

*42-2-206(1)(A)- Drove Vehicle when License Revoke, HTO Misdemeanor

As officers were responding to the reported sighting of Mr. Sanchez they were advised he was leaving in a vehicle in which a description and license plate number were provided. The vehicle matching the description was located and an officer initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle ultimately stopped in the 400 block of S. 6th Ave.

A male passenger, who the officer recognized as Mr. Sanchez, exited the vehicle running west in an alley. The Officer pursued Mr. Sanchez on foot for a short distance when Mr. Sanchez stopped, turned and confronted the officer. Mr. Sanchez brandished a weapon and was shot by a Sterling Police Officer. He was transported to Sterling Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Denver area hospital, unknown condition. There were no injuries to officers or bystanders.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation and it remains active. The SPD, Logan Sheriff’s Office and CBI all assisted in the initial response to the incident. As is protocol in officer involved shootings, the shooting officer will be on administrative leave. No additional information will be provided at this time. Additional charges are pending for Mr. Sanchez as a result of the incident.
