The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting with a fatal officer-involved shooting in Moffat County on Friday.
On Friday, March 31, 2023, at approximately 8:58 a.m., officers from the Craig Police Department (CPD) attempted to make contact with an adult male outside the Cool Water Grille at 337 W. Victory Way in Craig. The suspect, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, ran from the officers.
When Craig Police officers and Moffat County Sheriff's deputies approached the suspect, he produced a firearm and fled. Officers fired on the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
No other community members or officers were injured in this incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. One CPD officer has been placed on administrative leave for the investigation of the shooting, per CPD’s policy.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the 14th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is the lead investigative agency for this shooting. This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as appropriate. All updates, with the exception of naming the involved officer, will come from the CIRT.
