The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's (CBI’s) four forensic labs are busy during this week’s visit from ANAB accreditation assessors from around the nation. It’s all part of a very stringent re-accreditation process that began Monday and continues through Friday.

Shanley Garrett, quality manager for the CBI's forensics labs, says the accreditation is a critical component  of the labs’ overall integrity.

“We are honored to be part of this important assessment. There is an extra confidence that comes with being an accredited lab, as it demonstrates our commitment to strengthening our operations by ensuring we're meeting national standards, ” she said.

The assessors will be talking to staff and watching them conduct case work while also reviewing case files from every analyst and checking to ensure the labs are meeting more than 300 standards.

The assessors will be reviewing all disciplines including DNA, toxicology, serology and trace chemistry. They are observing and documenting for objective evidence of conformity.

Additionally, the DNA sections of our labs are inspected and held to the FBI's 2020 Quality Assurance Standards for DNA Casework and Databasing Laboratories.

CBI will receive the assessment results Friday and then have 30 days to respond.
