Law enforcement continues to investigate an incident involving an alleged homicide suspect out of Pueblo fleeing the area and into Cañon City in the morning hours of Sunday, January 7, 2024.

As released by the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) earlier on Sunday, law enforcement agencies, including the Pueblo Police Department, the Cañon City Police Department, and the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, pursued the suspect's vehicle (stolen KIA sedan) at speeds over 100mph at times as it traveled westbound on Highway 50 into Cañon City just before 11:00 a.m. The suspect vehicle then turned northbound and traveled into a field behind a house in the 2800 block of Central Avenue.

One of the two suspects, Davonte Evans (DOB: 12/18/2002) of Pueblo, was reported deceased. According to the Fremont County Coroner, notification of next of kin has been made.

The second suspect fled the area and was later arrested by the CCPD following a comprehensive search of the area using a variety of resources, including air support. Jordan L. Zeigler (DOB 07/29/2004) was booked through the Fremont County Jail and faces charges of Theft and Possession of a Concealed Weapon.  He was released on a PR bond on Monday morning. It should be noted that the charges Zeigler faces are specific to the incident in Cañon City on Sunday.

At the request of the CCPD, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested to investigate the incident in Cañon City. The Fremont County Coroner will determine the cause and manner of death of Evans.

After a preliminary review, there is no evidence to suggest that any officer fired their weapon; however, the autopsy is pending. The comprehensive investigation continues to move forward.

No officers are on admin. leave at this time.
