At the request of the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Alamosa Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting on October 31, 2023.

On Tuesday, at 3:53 p.m., the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a stolen vehicle report at the IHOP restaurant on Main Street.

Dispatch relayed that the alleged stolen vehicle (Honda CR-V) was located at a residence on County Road 107 northwest of Alamosa, and a male subject was reported to be making threats to the residents with a knife. There is no information showing the address to be associated with the suspect.

A member of the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, along with a Trooper with the Colorado State Patrol, arrived at the residence. They were flagged down by the homeowner, who was pointing towards the suspect and vehicle. The deputy was then confronted by the male suspect who was armed with a knife.  During the encounter, an Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy discharged a firearm just after 4:15 p.m.

First aid was administered immediately following the incident. The male suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

As part of this investigation, CBI agents and Alamosa Police Department detectives are reviewing body-worn camera footage and conducting interviews to determine the elements of the incident.

The Alamosa County Coroner has identified the male suspect as Benjamin Arvizo, age 31.

The case information will be presented to District Attorney Anne Kelly of the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.

The Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is completed, per sheriff’s office policies.

Information related to this investigation will be released as it becomes available.
